Who is Jackson Sousa?

Martial Arts Journey

Growing up in the Cantagalo community in Rio de Janeiro, Jackson was only 10 years old when he started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Under the watchful eyes of legends such as “Tererê”, Ricardo and Leo Vieira and Alan “Finfou” Nascimento, he used his passion for the sport as a tool for a better life. Despite his success in Brazil, Jackson was rather unknown worldwide due to his inability to get a visa to compete in the USA. This changed in 2013 when Jackson was able to compete in the IBJJF World Championship for the first time. Here he made himself known to the world seizing the gold medal and has never slowed down since.

Achievements

Jackson is known for his technical precision, speed and explosiveness. He is widely seen as one of the best guard passers in the world. He is the “King of the Mat” (2019) and has placed 3rd at the ADCC championship (2017). He is an IBJJF World No-Gi champion (three times) and Pan American No-Gi champion (twice). Jackson has also been an IBJJF World Championship medalist and European Champion (four times).

Mental Strength

Having overcome extreme hardship during his upbringing in Rio’s favelas, Jackson has developed mental strength and a champion’s mindset. He lives by the mantra “each one teach one” and is keen to pass on his knowledge, be it through this instructional module or to students at his Checkmat Hammersmith academy in London.

Jackson is sponsored by Shoyoroll and RVCA.
